Call me weird but I only just recently learned how to care for my hair. That is, what works to give me the best results!
In the warmer months, I completely avoid using any kind of heat tool. The humidity in the south is not a joke and I’m not about to start laughing. Anyway, in the cooler months, I can reintroduce heat tools and my hair styles last a lot longer.
Here is how I care for my hair in the summertime for heatless, saltless and beachy waves!

Pic 2: This pic is a few hours after pic 1.
Pic 1: Definitely need a trim here but you get the idea. This pic is Steps 1-8.
Note: I have long, dark, thick hair that goes a little past the middle of my back (5’11” for reference). The amount of products I use is based on the length of my hair. So if you have shorter hair with a similar texture, just experiment with a little less product. Conversely, if you have longer hair, try using a little more. The exact amount of each product genuinely varies so I recommend trying this out a few times to get a handle on what works best for your hair!
You’ll Need:

- RenPure’s Biotin Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner
- Sunatoria’s Keratin Hair Mask
- A large claw hair clip (or clip strong enough to hold your hair up in the shower)
- Large towel
- Large toothed comb/fingers to comb with
- Garnier’s Curl Nourish Leave in Treatment Air Dry Butter Cream
- Not Your Mother’s 10-in-1 Hair Treatment
- Garnier’s Marvelous Hair Oil (Argan oil is also good)
- Tresseme’s Hair Gel (or an equivalent gel with strong hold)
- Garnier’s Curl Sculpt (or equivalent cream with strong hold)
- About 40 minutes.
Wash Day Guide:
- Wash with shampoo and conditioner. For now, I’m using RenPure’s Biotin Shampoo and Conditioner and just following the instructions on the bottle.
- If I have extra time (5-10 minutes), I also use a deep conditioning mask such as Sunatoria’s Keratin Hair Mask. I apply right after I rinse and wring out my hair from the RenPure conditioner. By the time I finish washing and shaving, it’s time to rinse out the Sunatoria. It’s helpful to use a large claw clip to keep my hair in place on top of my hair so the hair mask can do its thing. It leaves my hair replenished and conditioned which is exactly what it needs!
- Next, out of the shower, I towel dry my hair. I know this can mean different things for different people but basically I get it to where it’s not dripping all over me anymore; still damp but not dripping.
- I comb through my hair either with my fingers or a large toothed comb. Let’s be honest, I usually use my fingers.
- Next, I apply Garnier’s Curl Nourish Leave in Treatment Air Dry Butter Cream. I’ll squeeze about two quarter sizes into my palm and apply all over from roots to ends.
- After that, I spray Not Your Mother’s 10-in-1 Hair Treatment and also comb it in from roots to ends. I’ll use about 3-4 sprays for this.
- If I have time, I’ll use Garnier’s Marvelous Hair Oil, again just combing in, about 3 pumps.
- Next, I’ll take a quarter size amount of Tresseme’s Hair Gel and spread it around my hands. Then I’ll scrunch it into my hair with my palms facing up and first touching my ends. Then push up towards my roots. I love this hair gel in particular because it doesn’t leave my hair all crunchy at the end of the day.
- Finally, I’ll take a small dime size dollop of Garnier’s Curl Sculpt and kind of smear it all over my hair. So not necessarily combing it through my hair but more so covering my hair’s out layer. Otherwise, like today, if I forget to do this step after Steps 1-8 and after a long day, I can revitalize my waves by running some water over my hair and continuing with this step.
Total time: ~40 minutes
My hair stays soft and manageable! Plus, I get compliments on how much volume I have and how wavy/curly it looks!
Additional notes:
- Throughout the day, I flip my hair on its side part which helps enhance the volume. So no Gen Z middle parts during the summer for me! Lol!
- If you’re interested in more hair care tips for curly hair, check out the curly girl LOC method. Essentially, LOC stands for Leave in conditioner, oil, and curling cream/mousse/gel. Curls need moisture and they can get that from leave in conditioner. The oil helps keep it moist and not evaporate like water into air! The curling cream obviously holds the curl in place throughout the day.
- I’ll try to update this blog post with a video tutorial as well! Stay tuned.
